CLEAN RIVERS, SAVE OCEANS

EXPLORE THE PROJECT

The ECOALF Foundation and BIOTHERM unite to conserve the aquatic ecosystems and stop litter from reaching the sea in a project with a three year duration that will start up in November 2020 with the Jarama River. The objective is to recuperate fluvial environments by stressing the harm that discarded garbage causes rivers and oceans, simultaneously addressing participation, conservation, sensitivity, and scientific understanding.

A large part of the waste that destroys the marine environment is transported via rivers. This garbage does not only have an effect on the ocean’s health, but it also has a negative impact on the fluvial ecosystems themselves, which in Spain are subdued to: water scarcity, chemical pollution, the occupying of their space, extreme adjustments to their water flows, and the invasion of exotic species.

"80% OF MARINE LITTER IS GENERATED INLAND. THE RIVERS, FLOODS, AND WIND DRAG IT OUT TO THE COAST".
Before this situation, the ECOALF Foundation and BIOTHERM, with LIBERA’s collaboration and experience, set in motion a project with a duration of three years to better the environmental status of the rivers, from the river's source to its mouth, which originates in Jarama. “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans” includes different activities focused on waste removal, but also addresses sensitization and the environmental restoration at the same time to avoid a relapse of the issue. Furthermore, it includes measurements and characterizations that offer very interesting data to understand the origins of the garbage, evaluate its impact on the ecosystem, and be able to monitor the introduced actions.
