ECOALF Foundation and BIOTHERM,with the collaboration and experience of the LIBERA Project launched this project in 2020 with a three-year duration to better the environmental state of our river, from its source to its mouth, with its origin in Jarama. “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans” has the objective to restore the aquatic ecosystems with different activities focused on collecting waste, but also touching on bring awareness to the issue at hand while restoring the environment to prevent the problem from reoccurring. Furthermore, it provides insight to understanding the waste’s origin, evaluate its impact on the ecosystem and be able to monitor the implemented initiatives.

”80% of marine litter is generated inland. The rivers, floods, and wind drag it out to the coast”.

CLEAN RIVERS, SAVE OCEANS is a participatory project that organizes days for collecting litter and restoring the environment for all types of audiences. In it’s first year, it carried out 20 clean-ups in the Jarama-River environment through as it passes through the Community of Madrid. Thanks to the participation of more than 372 volunteers, it has prevented more than 7,000 kg of waste from getting into the oceans and causing harm to the aquatic systems. Through their participation, the volunteers better understand the marine-litter problem, and its origin in the rivers, in order raise awareness and inspire the rest of the community.

Furthermore, they carry out efforts to remove invasive species the alter the biodiversity, installing nest-boxes for birds and repopulating the environment with indigenous species. At a scientific level, microplastic tracking and general awareness efforts are carried out. “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans” also organizes corporate volunteer opportunities for businesses and other entities that want to join the project by collaborating through their teams.
