THE EMERGEN(SEA) 2023
-
AROUND 460 MILLION TONNES OF PLASTIC ARE PRODUCED A YEAR
-
ONLY ABOUT 9% IS RECYCLED
-
THERE ARE AT LEAST 150 MILLION TONNES OF PLASTICS IN OUR OCEANS
Much of this mismanaged plastic ends up on the streets and near water sources, as it rains, it is swept out to sea. It is estimated that up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic waste enters our oceans from land-based sources and currently there are at least 150 million tonnes already in our oceans.

70% OF WASTE IS AT THE BOTTOM OF OUR OCEAN
What we see floating at the surface is only a small percent of all the pollution. All this waste sinks to the bottom of the ocean, having invisible landfills across the ocean that will remain there forever. 70% of waste is at the bottom of our ocean. This World Oceans Day, we want to draw attention to the state of our oceans and call out The EMERGEN(SEA). We cannot continue using our oceans as giant landfills and we need to change our habits to prevent our waste from getting there.
There are +4,200 fishermen that participate in Ecoalf Foundation’s Upcycling the Oceans project to remove waste each and every day. This World Oceans Day our ocean heroes from Spain to Greece share what they witness on a day-to-day basis and to do our part.
